Hmmm

Here is my latest stab at trying to explain unsavory things.

The current US population as of 052409@0821 is 306,500,959

The current world population at this time is 6,781,962,472

Using official numbers from the guv'mint, I reckon we are about 4.5% of the world population.

Trying to find exact figures on what we bring in is dicey, but it appears that we suck up around 25% of the energy used in the world and about a third of the other resources.

We spent 600 billion of the 1.1 trillion making up the worlds military expenditures (54.5%). We have military personnel stationed in >120 countries.

Some folks say that we are not an empire.

Bingo.

But this sorta contradicts yesterday's post--I expect cars will be here for a looong time--it's the slave-wage factory workers worldwide that will lose their cars.

I'm guessing our energy use declines slightly (less poor drivers, no change for most) but our per capita % rises dramatically, as the rest of the world drastically cuts energy use priced in dollars they can;t afford (remember, I believe that the dollar will strengthen relative to other currencies, not drop).

Cheers!

No, the two posts fit hand in glove. I don't think that we can hold onto our empire, and without empire, we cannot continue access the cheap energy required for cars.

I make no promises, but I think that we will be reprising last summer's oil prices in the next twelve months. Things will begin to shake out then.

Fair enough.

But I'd bet we don't get above $100/barrel in the next 12 months, let alone get to $149.

Let's call it a gentlemen's bet though, as I'm still waiting for $8 silver!

It will depend on how fast the economy picks up...if it starts turning up fast, oil will shoot up fast and high....If it is a slow recovery or stagnant, it will inch up.
