No matter how high the bullshit gets, some in the MSM always consider themselves above-it-all. David Brooks is one such person. They wait until something that they didn't see coming happens and then purport to explain the finer points of it to us.
Populism is scary as hell to the elite in this country. I suspect they will employ a strategy of 'divide and conquer' by attempting to smear them with labels such as Brooks did. 'Tea Baggers' was one such smear attempt to divide the angry masses.
"Populism" is scary as hell to ME. For it's that which drove the "war on poverty", the "war on drugs", and now, the "war on terror". All of which have done soooo much for individual Liberty... The PTB drive "populism" in as much as it serves their purposes, but that "wedge" is rolled out whenever "populism" takes a turn they don't like....
